Squiggle Town
Squiggle Town is a handwriting practice game for young Australian learners. Children help the people and businesses around town by practising letters and repairing signs through short, playful activities.
Practice first
The core experience follows a simple loop: watch a letter being formed, trace it, try it independently, celebrate the attempt, and return to the town. Squiggle Town is designed to make repeated letter-formation practice enjoyable rather than turn handwriting into a test.
Designed for Australian handwriting
Squiggle Town is being developed around Australian handwriting conventions, with versioned letter templates and a focus on the process of forming a letter rather than only the final picture. The app records ordered stroke traces so that feedback and progress views can be based on how a letter was written.
Local-first by design
Learner profiles, practice attempts, sessions and progress are stored on the device. The current design does not require an account, cloud sync, advertising, social features, subscriptions or a remote teacher dashboard.
What Squiggle Town is not
Squiggle Town is a practice tool, not a handwriting diagnosis or clinical assessment. It does not claim to provide a validated proficiency score. The app uses neutral observations and encourages children to keep practising with pencil and paper as well as on screen.
Research-informed development
The project is informed by earlier James Cook University honours research into digital capture of handwriting processes, including legibility, fluency, stroke direction and stroke order. Squiggle Town deliberately treats those ideas as design lineage rather than carrying earlier scoring thresholds forward as validated learner measures.
